Can I pay for things with the transit card?
Short answer
Yes — up to NT$1,500 in a single purchase and NT$3,000 in a day at shops that take it. Those ceilings do not apply to government fees, medical and school payments, parking, or anything counted as transport, so the card is capped as a wallet and uncapped as a ticket.
It leaves the station with you
The same card that opens the metro gate is accepted in supermarkets, shops, food and drink places, petrol stations, leisure venues, medical institutions, schools and for public service charges. You hold it over the reader and the amount comes off the stored value.
Which is the useful shift in thinking: this is not a metro pass that happens to work in a shop, it is a stored-value card that happens to be how you ride the metro.
Two ceilings to know about
At designated retailers a single purchase is capped at NT$1,500, and the day's total at NT$3,000. That is enough for ordinary shopping and not enough for something expensive, so it is worth knowing before you are at the counter.
The caps are lifted for government fees and public service charges, school expenses, medical costs, parking, and transport services including the Maokong Gondola and public bicycles. The distinction is between buying things and paying for services.
What it already covers on the transit side
Taipei Metro lists the card for its own network, the New Taipei Circular Line, the Danhai and Ankeng light rail lines, buses and the Maokong Gondola. Adult cards pay the same fare as a single-journey ticket rather than a discounted one; the reductions are for senior, charity and companion cards.
Add value before you use it. The balance is refundable when you hand the card back.
