Where can I leave my luggage for the day?

In the metro, not just the airport

Shanghai Metro operates luggage storage at 32 stations, and the list is chosen for where travellers actually are: Shanghai Railway Station, People's Square, Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2, Xujiahui, Lujiazui and Disney Resort among them.

That placement is the useful part. A bag can wait at the station nearest your afternoon rather than at the hotel you have already checked out of.

Sizes described in suitcase inches

Three sizes, and they are defined by what fits rather than in centimetres: small takes a backpack, medium a 20-inch suitcase, large a 28-inch suitcase. That makes it unusually easy to know in advance whether your bag will go in.

Charging is hourly with a daily ceiling for each size, so a long day costs less than the hourly rate would suggest and a short stop costs little.

What cannot go in

Flammable, explosive and toxic items are forbidden, along with anything else prohibited by law. This is the same list that governs what you can carry through the station gates in the first place.

Since the lockers sit inside the paid area of the network in most cases, plan on passing security screening with the bag before you store it — the screening happens on the way in, not at the locker.
