Where can I get cash with a foreign card?
Short answer
ATMs are everywhere and international cards work at more than 20,000 of them — but local-bank machines cap each withdrawal low, so the machine you choose decides your fees.
Coverage is not the problem
ATMs are a common sight in Vietnamese cities, and international cards such as Visa are accepted at more than 20,000 machines nationwide. Finding one is rarely the issue.
Cards work at the counter too: hotels, tour operators, boutiques, restaurants, grocery stores and spas generally take international debit and credit cards. It is the small vendors and street stalls that stay cash-only, which is where the withdrawal habit comes from.
The withdrawal limit is the thing to plan around
Local-bank machines cap a single withdrawal at roughly 2–3 million dong, while international-bank ATMs allow around 5–10 million. Since most cards charge a fixed fee per withdrawal, the low-cap machine quietly triples your cost for the same amount of cash.
So the rule is to seek out the international-bank machines when you need a real sum, and treat the corner ATM as a top-up rather than a main supply.
Changing notes instead
Exchange vendors operate inside the international airports just before the exit gates, which makes the first handful of dong easy to get before you have found anything else.
Beyond that, you can usually change money at your hotel, in the tourist districts and at local banks. Between those and the ATMs, running out of cash takes real effort — the planning is about fees, not availability.
Good to know
- Local-bank ATMs cap at ~2–3M dong; international-bank ones at ~5–10M
- Per-withdrawal fees make the low-cap machines expensive for big sums
- Airport exchange counters sit just before the exit gates
